The Green Finger Problem

It's never the day you buy it. It's somewhere around the third week — a faint green shadow under a ring, a necklace that has gone slightly grey at the clasp. You assume it's you. It usually isn't.

What the green mark actually is

Most inexpensive jewelry is brass underneath, and brass is mostly copper. Copper is a reactive metal: exposed to moisture, oxygen, salt and the mild acids in ordinary sweat, it forms copper salts on its surface. Those salts are green, they're soft, and they transfer readily onto skin.

This is the same reaction that turns a copper roof green over decades, running on your finger at body temperature in about a fortnight.

Two things follow from that, and both are worth knowing before you spend money on jewelry again.

First, it isn't a hygiene problem. The mark appears faster on people who are warm, active, or live somewhere humid, which is to say people who are using their bodies normally. Scrubbing harder doesn't help.

Second, it isn't a sign the plating was cheap. It's a sign the plating ended. Every plated piece has a finite surface layer. The only question is what's waiting underneath when it wears through.

Why plating wears through faster than you'd expect

Gold plating is measured in microns, and the range in the market is enormous. Flash plating — common on fast-fashion jewelry — can be well under half a micron. That is a layer thinner than a human red blood cell, sitting on a ring that rubs against a car key, a laptop edge, a shopping bag handle and another ring, all day.

What accelerates it, in rough order of damage:

  • Friction. By a wide margin the biggest factor. Rings die faster than earrings for purely mechanical reasons.
  • Alcohols and solvents — perfume, hand sanitiser, hairspray. These attack the finish directly.
  • Abrasives — exfoliants, toothpaste, household cleaners, "polishing" cloths meant for solid silver.
  • Stored contact. Jewelry left in a heap scratches itself overnight, every night.

Water, notably, is near the bottom of that list. The advice to take jewelry off in the shower is mostly inherited from an era when clasps were fragile and drains were unforgiving. Plain water does very little to a decent finish. Chlorine and salt do more, and mainly because they're left to dry on the surface.

The fix isn't better care. It's a different core.

You can slow all of this down with good habits, and we'd recommend them regardless. But careful maintenance of a brass piece is managing a decline, not preventing one. The base metal is still copper, and copper is still going to do this the moment it's exposed.

The alternative is to change what's underneath.

Stainless steel doesn't oxidise the way brass does. Its chromium content forms a thin, self-repairing passive layer that resists corrosion — the same property that makes it the default for surgical instruments and cookware. It's nickel-free in the grades we use, which matters enormously if you're one of the very large number of people who react to costume jewelry.

Plate that in 18k gold and you get the warmth of fine jewelry on a core that has no interest in turning green. And crucially: when the plating does eventually soften after years of wear, what's revealed is a hypoallergenic metal, not a reactive one. The failure mode is "slightly less golden," not "green finger and a rash."

The three habits worth keeping

Even with steel underneath, a plated finish is a finish. These take about thirty seconds a week between them:

  1. Last on, first off. Jewelry goes on after perfume, sunscreen and lotion; it comes off before anything abrasive.
  2. Rinse and dry after salt or chlorine. Not because the water hurts it, but because the residue sits in the settings.
  3. Store pieces apart. The pouch isn't packaging theatre. Most visible wear on plated jewelry is scratching from other jewelry.

Do that, and the question stops being how long the piece will last, and becomes what you'll wear it for.
