Two thousand years ago, a Roman naturalist sat down to explain where pearls come from, and got it almost entirely wrong. He was also the first person to write down something about jewelry that we still haven't improved on.
The man who catalogued everything
Pliny the Elder finished his Natural History around AD 77 — thirty-seven books attempting to describe the entire known world. He died two years later sailing toward Vesuvius, close enough to take notes. The work survived him, and with it the earliest surviving European account of how people thought about precious things.
On pearls, Pliny reports the going theory: oysters rise to the surface, open, and are impregnated by dew. Good dew, clear pearls. Bad weather, cloudy ones. It is completely false and rather beautiful, and it held for over a thousand years.
What he got right was stranger and more useful.
The part he nailed
Pliny noticed that the value of an ornament had very little to do with the material it was made from, and almost everything to do with what it signalled about the wearer. He describes women wearing pearls not at banquets but on ordinary days — walking, in the street, in the bath — precisely because being seen to treat something extraordinary as ordinary was the point. Wealth that had to be saved for occasions was, in his account, a lesser kind of wealth.
He was writing satire. He thought it was decadent. But he had identified something real: the jewelry that signals the most is the jewelry you never take off.
That instinct outlived the dew theory. It's still the reason a worn-thin wedding band reads as more meaningful than a showpiece in a safe, and why a necklace with a faint scratch from six years of daily wear says something a pristine one can't.
The problem Rome didn't have to solve
Here's where the ancient world had an advantage over most jewelry made today. Roman ornaments were gold, silver, or nothing. Solid metal doesn't have a surface that can wear away, because it's the same material all the way through. A Roman ring could be worn every day for forty years and simply become a slightly softer version of itself.
Most affordable jewelry now is not solid anything. It's a brass core with a whisper of colour on top — and the moment that layer gives, the base metal underneath begins to oxidise against your skin. That's the green mark. It isn't dirt and it isn't your body chemistry failing; it's copper doing what copper does.
Which creates a modern trap Pliny never had to write about: the jewelry we can afford to wear constantly is precisely the jewelry that can't survive being worn constantly. So it gets saved. And saved jewelry, as he noticed, does less for you.
What we took from it
Louryx starts from a stainless steel core rather than brass. It costs more to work and is considerably harder to finish well, and it's the entire reason a piece can be showered in, swum in, slept in and travelled with without a conversation about whether today is a day worth wearing it.
The 18k gold plating gives the warmth. The steel underneath means that when the finish eventually softens — everything does, over enough years — what's left is still hypoallergenic, still nickel-free, and still not going to mark you.
It's a narrow, unglamorous, engineering-shaped answer to a question a Roman asked as a joke: what would it take to actually wear the good thing every day?
